I'm leaving in a few minutes, but here's a review of the weekend so far!
Friday night was the party at Katelyn's. Six of the first-year English grads crammed into her living room and asked one another awkward questions, tried experimental drinks, and all in all, tried to forget about the impending doom that will undoubtedly come later this semester. There are some real characters in the group--in fact, I think all of us are a little off, in one way or another. Katelyn & Josh (and I, too, to a lesser extent) got into a bizarre insult war that has carried on until today. Hansol made some unintentionally disparaging remarks at my cooking, Kelly skilfully avoided answering the awkward questions, and I realized that I should be careful with what I say, because people with dirty minds can easily take my innocent remarks and turn them into innuendo.
So, after a great night of possibly but not necessarily strange decision-making, I was hoping Saturday would turn out to be almost as great. J., Ke., and I went to UI's swing dance club, where they had a beginners' lesson. It was one of those days that made me regret being too busy in undergrad, because I would have liked to be better at quickly picking up the moves. Nevertheless, we all had a great time! The teaching portion was on a rotational basis, so I ended up learning the dance with a bunch of (surprisingly nice) undergrad guys. My last partner and I matched, from our cream-and-brown plaid shirts and blue jeans down to our brown shoes. We had a blast. One of the others told me I was his favorite partner!
After the lesson, the swing club hosted a free dance. I danced with the two guys from the group, and it was great! Ke. is practically a pro, although he denies it, and dancing with him made me look a lot better than I really am. J. is fun to dance with [I felt like it wasn't a big deal if I screwed up, and sometimes it was nice to cut loose with a little "freestyle" (aka, not swing)]. I'm excited for the next lesson. Hopefully there's a shop out there that sells swing-style dresses--I'd totally invest in some for future dancing.
And lesson learned: breaking in new heels at a 2-4 hour dance is maybe not the best idea.
