Moving in

After a busy day and my first graduate-level class, I've finally got my own apartment! It's a two room (one bed, one kitchen/dining/living room, one bathroom) that is pretty old, but not too bad. The Powers that Be kindly provided tenants with a full-sized refrigerator, stovetop, and oven, so though I have been burning through way too much money lately, they at least saved me those expenses.

I have yet to decide exactly how to arrange the furniture. I don't have a bed yet, since the mattress delivery people are supposed to come tomorrow, and I'm waiting on a washing machine and dryer (ordered today). I have acquired the following:
: (1) card table with (2) folding chairs
: (1) empty two-drawer box/cabinet, currently lying on its back
: (1) upright lamp and (1) folding desk lamp
: (1) "futon," purchased cheaply at Target. (The mattress is on a flat base, and folds up to form a seat. The sides of the seat fold up to form armrests. It's not as complicated as it sounds).
: Any number of miscellaneous and primarily unremarkable household-related items.

Right now, I'm flirting with the idea of setting up my TV. I am ever-paranoid that I could break it. As long as it's in the box, I tell myself, it will be safe. Nigh-untouchable. I'm supposed to be unpacking and trying to organize all of my junk, but it is a good evening to relax. I could and should also be working on homework, but no! I am feeling dramatic, and the combination of dramaticism and homework is usually fatal. Instead, let me briefly ramble about the day.

My first grad school class was Intro to Contemporary Theory. The professor is very lively and sort of reminds me of one of the English profs I had for undergrad. Many of the topics we're scheduled to cover are fairly familiar. The Lit Crit/Theory course in undergrad wasn't a waste of time or sanity, after all! We had to sign up for individual presentations today. I didn't get my ideal topic (Gilbert and Gubar's The Madwoman in the Attic), since I unthinkingly sat in a spot that made the sign-up sheets reach me last. I will be doing a topic I've discussed before, but it's tough: Lacan. Oh boy, that guy was insane. Fortunately, about half the members of my cohort (read: other grad students entering this semester) are enrolled in the course. That's reassuring.

Have I mentioned that my cohort is a great bunch? They really are. More on them in the future. More on the apartment in the future, as well.
